Sackbuts are a type of trombone from the Renaissance and Baroque eras, characterised by a telescopic slide that is used to vary the length of the tube to change pitch.
The trombone is considered to be an incredibly important brass instrument in modern orchestras, brass ensembles and brass bands; balancing the high notes of the trumpet with the other instruments.
Although it may sound ironic, when pushed, the sackbut can easily make a loud and brassy sound, yet is also considered to respond well to soft playing - more than a modern trombon
