Per oltre 100 anni, dalla metà del XIX alla metà del XX secolo, i tubisti orchestrali francesi suonavano esclusivamente la piccola tuba francese in Do, preferendola per dimensioni e intonazione rispetto alle tubas più grandi di altri paesi.
Intonata al Do sopra un euphonium, la nostra tuba francese in Do TC236 P suona senza sforzo tutta la musica per tuba, fino al registro più basso.
A differenza delle tubas francesi di un tempo, dove la 3ª valvola aggiungeva una combinazione 2+3 (terza maggiore, o 4 semitoni), la 3ª valvola della tuba francese Wessex aggiunge una combinazione più convenzionale 1+2 (terza minore, o 3 semitoni). Questo evita la complicazione di dover imparare un nuovo sistema di diteggiatura.
Con un tono gallico distintivo, questa eccezionale tuba in Do si può spesso ascoltare in pezzi senza tempo come: Quadri di un’esposizione di Ravel, Sinfonia in Re di Franck, Sinfonia per organo di Saint-Saëns e Carmen di Bizet; un ‘must-have’ per i musicisti orchestrali che vogliono eseguire queste opere in modo autentico.
Nota: Sebbene chiamato tuba, questo strumento ha la dimensione di un euphonium ed è suonato con un bocchino di dimensione euphonium. Un bocchino per tuba lo farebbe suonare stonato e senza il suo tono distintivo.
